I first discovered the astonishing work of Sandra mk over on Flickr. It was a similar reaction to my first discovery of Zentangle®–Wow! I have to get more of this! I signed up to stalk… I mean, follow her on Flickr.

Then I found her on YouTube: Mesmerizing!!! I wrote down and then ordered the kind of pen she uses, pestered her with questions… but, basically, watched her videos multiple times, enraptured as her drawings unfolded. I have forwarded and recommended her videos dozens of times.

No matter what pens I use, I don’t have her special gift for her style of drawing. I’m happy to be a fan and gain inspiration simply from observation.

When I discovered she was giving away a print, I had to both enter and also let you know to RUN your little fingers over and get on the list! People buy lottery tickets and I’ve never understood that, it just holds no appeal for me. But a lottery like *this*?! Sign me up.

I hope you enjoy absorbing Sandra’s work and find something inspiring there as I do.

I have many daughters. A couple of them I gave birth to; many others call me “mom” and I’m delighted to accept all the joys and heartaches that accompany that title. Sometimes we do more formal activities like attend concerts, and sometimes we go to the local Indian shop and try on belly dancing costumes; one just never knows.
Lately we’ve been drawing on blue jeans; well, mostly I draw and they admire then wear.
Two weeks ago, Cidra and Meg were here and I raided their duffel bags to use for my own Tangle Time. Here are some of the results, 3 pics of Meg’s are in the top row, 3 pics of Cidra’s in the bottom row:

You may be able to see these more conveniently at Flickr

Cidra is 3″ shy of a foot taller than Meg. This necessitated a different scale for each of their pants, and Meg’s were completed fairly quickly. As you can see, Cidra’s pants have been altered many times; in fact I believe there is a challenge to keep them going as close to forever as possible. I think the tangling works very nicely with the embroidery and patches. What do you think? Have you ever tangled on blue jeans? Other clothing?

Sometimes I want to draw without a string, without a plan, just meandering along the path that Zentangle® unrolls before me. Frankly, I find some of the ZIAs and Zendalas intimidating in their complexity and intricacy. I want to reassure myself that I can just let go, not worry whether my Betweed weightings are too scribbly or my Mookas are too rambling. Relax, enjoy.

This was a challenge I wanted to make myself take quite stringently. The idea was to divide a square into 8 equal sections (you know, a plus then a cross). It was very difficult to force myself to use those, to my estimation, very small, and very regular divisions; it’s just not natural to me.
This tile is my second effort and I met the challenge to my satisfaction (threw away the first, something I almost never do).
Now I can’t wait to get back to looser, more organic work! Whew!

Over at I am the Diva, the challenge this week is to use the newest official Zentangle® pattern “Fengle”. Maria and Rick said at the latest CZT training (#8 in Providence) that they had been trying to create a pattern with this idea for quite some time. It just wouldn’t gel. Apparently the addition of sushi is the trick…
I struggled with Fengle, getting the “s’s” to swirl out from the center. Mine started out fine and by the third “s”, they were wandering off in directions of their own. Plus I wanted to try linking them together, which consists of choosing one tip end of the first Fengle design and using *that* as the first “s” in the next Fengle design (that tip is the center of the next Fengle). Right… Yes, I have  practice pages filled with Fengle scrawlings, and here’s a tile, or check it out at Flickr
